In the 90s, Vauxhall wanted to compete with the BMW M5 and the Mercedes 190E, so they gave the Cavalier to Lotus so that they can improve the performance of the car. The end result was the Lotus Carlton with a 3.6 liter engine that can push 377 hp and achieve 0-60 mph in 5.2 seconds.
In 1993 a Lotus Carlton sporting the plate '40 RA' was stolen from a house in West Midlands, UK. The criminals used the car to rob dozens of liquor stores, stealing over £20.000 worth of cigarettes and alcohol. The car was so fast that the police wrote in a statement "We simply haven't been able to get near the thing and it looks unlikely that we ever will". Legends said that 40 RA even managed to beat the Police Helicopter. As of today the criminals were never found and the car is said to be either at the bottom of a lake or crushed into a cube at the scrapyard.
